Summer brings that burn to you and your skin, inciting acne flare ups and intense challenges. High levels of humidity, brutal UV rays, severe pollution and extreme sweating are only but a few uninvited conditions that the Indian summer ushers in.
Acne is frustrating, and breakouts present itself more frequently during the hottest months of the year. Understanding the why, the what and how to it is essential – in this blog we are breaking why acne gets worse in heat and how to treat and protect oneself from further breakouts in the course of the summer.

Why Indian Summers Triggers Body Acne
- Excess oil production: Heat pushes sebaceous glands into overdrive. The surplus sebum mixes with dead skin cells and blocks follicles, giving acne-causing bacteria (Cutibacterium acnes) exactly what they need to thrive.
- Trapped sweat: In hot cities, humidity can exceed 80%, meaning sweat barely evaporates. It sits on the skin, especially under clothing on the back and chest, mixing with oil and bacteria. Showering post-workout isn’t optional; it’s essential.
- Fungal acne: A lesser-known but common Indian summer culprit. High humidity encourages yeast overgrowth on the skin, causing small, uniform, itchy bumps often mistaken for regular acne. Crucially, standard acne treatments won’t help, antifungal washes (ketoconazole or selenium sulphide) are needed instead.
- Friction from clothing: Tight gym wear, backpack straps, and synthetic fabrics rubbing against sweaty skin cause acne mechanica, mechanical inflammation that drives breakouts deeper into the follicle.
- Wrong sunscreen: Thick, oily sunscreens clog pores on the body. With the Indian sun being as intense as it is, skipping SPF isn’t an option, but using the wrong formula can make body acne significantly worse.

Treatment: What Actually Works
Salicylic acid (BHA) is the gold standard for body acne. A 2% salicylic acid body wash used daily penetrates pores, dissolves excess sebum, and clears congestion over 4–6 weeks.
Benzoyl peroxide targets acne-causing bacteria directly. Body washes at 2.5%–5% concentration, left on for 2–3 minutes before rinsing, are especially effective for inflamed breakouts. (Note: it bleaches fabric, so rinse thoroughly.)
Niacinamide reduces inflammation, regulates oil, and strengthens the skin barrier — a versatile ingredient that works on both face and body.
Retinoids (adapalene or tretinoin) are worth considering for persistent or cystic breakouts, as they accelerate cell turnover and prevent follicular clogging. Best started with professional guidance.
Ingredients that address PIH include niacinamide, vitamin C, alpha arbutin, and azelaic acid. Understanding how to treat PIH in Indian skin is a core part of skincare courses and professional beauty courses at Bodycraft Academy. To learn more about the course, click here.

Prevention: The Indian Summer Guide
Cleanse smartly. Shower twice daily and always immediately after exercise. Use a salicylic acid wash on acne-prone areas. Avoid aggressive scrubbing on active breakouts, it spreads bacteria.
Don’t skip moisturiser. Acne-prone skin still needs hydration. Skipping it causes the skin to compensate with more oil. Choose lightweight, oil-free, non-comedogenic formulas with hyaluronic acid or glycerin.
Choose the right sunscreen. For body use in summer, opt for gel-based or fluid SPF 30–50 PA+++ formulas explicitly labelled non-comedogenic. Avoid thick cream sunscreens on the back and chest.
Wear breathable fabrics. Cotton and moisture-wicking materials reduce friction and allow sweat to evaporate. Change out of gym clothing immediately after workouts, and wash pillowcases weekly.
Watch your diet. High-glycaemic foods and sugary drinks spike sebum production. Prioritise water (2.5–3 litres daily), fresh fruits, vegetables, and zinc-rich foods like pumpkin seeds and legumes.
Mind your hair products. Oils, conditioners, and serums run down the back and chest during a shower, clogging pores. Always rinse hair before the body.
